RMC Thoughts: Social Responsibility

Social Responsibility is already a popular topic and has been discussed, explained, studied, and promoted in the academe, in public and government, and in the private and corporate world. We in the private business and corporate world, have a big responsibility and we should always practice and apply social responsibility in all our business dealings. We should not forget that social responsibility is the ethical behavior of a person and entity towards society. It is also the interaction of a person with the social and legal obligations to different societies. The good name of a person or entity should be evaluated not only on financial performance or financial position but also on social performance and environmental performance as well. These should be the bottom line achievement of a person or entity in this time and age-economic or financial performance, social performance, and environmental performance. In answer to responsible citizenship, all firms and professionals should provide opportunities to people to improve their standard of living through economic growth and development and through environmental and sustainable management, as well. Social performance focuses on the following issues: workplace issues, product issues, and public issues. Environmental performance focuses on: environmental management, pollution and emission control, proper waste disposal, greening of the environment, and preservation of natural resources. Sustainability performance focuses on: waste to profit, development of sustainable energy, development of natural resources for sustainable use, recycling and re-use of sustainable waste. Alleviating poverty by setting up livelihood projects, providing free education and training for the poor, sending medical and dental missions to remote and poor places, creating classrooms and schools, donating books and computer equipment are some activities undertaken in support of social responsibility. All of these will surely redound to the benefit of the entities as these will ensure healthy and economically progressive communities.
